Air China Pledges Support For P.R.C. Planemaker
In an interview with Bloomberg at last week's Singapore Air Show, Air China Senior Vice President He Li said it would "absolutely support" Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, which aims to challenge Boeing and Airbus in the Chinese market. Comac is the maker of China's first narrow-body passenger aircraft, the168-seat C919, which uses an engine produced by CFM, a General Electric Co./Safran SA joint venture. State-controlled Air China is the P.R.C.'s largest international carrier. According to the International Air Transport Association, China has replaced Japan as Asia Pacific's largest market. China's fleet is 1,400 aircraft compared to Japan's 540. Its domestic market of 5.7 million weekly seats is more than double Japan's 2.6 million, and China's 1.4 million weekly international seat market is now slightly larger than Japan's 1.3 million.
