Beijing, Seoul Hit By Worst Snow For Decades
Heavy snow has caused delays and cancellations and airports in China and South Korea at the start of the new year. According to China’s Central Meteorological Administration up to 12 inches of snow fell in Beijing during the first weekend of 2010, which is the largest January snowfall in 50 years. Temperatures fell to minus 16 degrees Celsius on Jan. 4. At Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) more than 90 percent of flights were canceled on the first working day of the year.
Seoul also experienced its heaviest snowfall in decades on Jan. 4. The Korea Meteorological Administration said 10.3 inches of snow fell in the Seoul metropolitan area on Monday morning. The Korea Times reported that all domestic flights from Gimpo International Airport (GMP) were grounded, but only a few international flights were delayed at Incheon International Airport (ICN). Severe weather is expected to persist throughout the week across northern and central China and Korea.
