Beijing’s China World Hotel is located in the middle of the business and diplomatic district. It is an ideal location, just minutes from the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, and is a perfect jumping-off point for exploring the city.

It was my first trip alone, as well as my first trip to Beijing — I did not know anyone, I do not speak much Chinese and I was going into a bit of culture shock. Then I entered the China World Hotel and I have never felt more taken care of in my life.

I arrived around 5 p.m. and was led directly to the Horizon Club, on the 20th floor. I was able to check in away from the crowds in the lobby. While waiting for my room key, I was offered a cold towel and orange juice. Soon, I was taken to my room and my luggage was delivered.

The lobby is reminiscent of an old, majestic New York City hotel, with grand marble floors, columns and staircases. I expected the rooms would reflect that style as well, however, they were actually modern and quite comfortable, without sacrificing grandness. Shortly after I settled into the room, it was time for the turn-down service — and what a service it was. A box of chocolate truffles was placed on my pillow, next to a pair of pajamas customized with my initials. I was asked about my day exploring the city. I was eager to share and was told to please let the staff know if I needed anything. That kind of service made me feel at home. Everyone truly seemed to care if I was enjoying my stay.

The rooms were equipped with broadband Internet, TVs and DVD players. Instant coffee was available in the minibar, but guests of the Horizon Club have access to fresh coffee throughout the day. The bathroom contained a shower stall and tub, along with amenities such as toothpaste, a toothbrush, a razor and shaving cream (in addition to the usual shampoo, conditioner and lotion).

My stay was very brief, only about 17 hours, but I enjoyed the breakfast buffet before leaving. Boasting Western and Eastern selections, it was difficult to decide what I wanted. I eventually chose hash browns, mushrooms, vegetable fried rice and snap peas. All were delicious.

Between the great location, excellent service and beautiful, classic décor, it is no wonder the China World Hotel is one of Beijing’s finest.
